trick or treat?…treat it is!

Happy Halloween! What’s Halloween without caramel apples?…Not a very good one! I found this recipe on Taste of Home (via Pinterest) and immediately thought these would be perfect for Halloween. They are bite sized…good for teeny tiny hands and you can avoid the gooey all-over-your-face-mess of a regular caramel apple. Not only are these the perfect size but they have the perfect flavor. They are more delicious than a regular caramel apple!

Caramel Apple Bites

  • 1/3 cup finely chopped unpeeled apples
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 14oz package Werther’s® Original Chewy Caramels
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • Chopped walnuts

In a small saucepan, combine filling ingredients. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened; set aside to cool.

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.

In a medium bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.

Shape dough into 1 inch balls.

Flatten dough and place 1/4 teaspoon filling in center of each.

Fold dough over filling and reshape into balls. Place 1 inch apart on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to cool.

In a small saucepan over low heat, cook caramels and evaporated milk until caramels are melted. Stirring frequently.

Insert a toothpick into each cookie and dip into caramel until 1/2 or 3/4 coated; allow excess to drip off. Dip bottoms into nuts. Place on waxed paper to set.

Now gobble them up with all your ghost and goblins of the evening! Enjoy!
